Windy Day 1

Day 1 of summer camp was a success! There was tons of wind and fun!

The Beginner Opti sailors did a swim test for a safety check! We have to be sure they can tread water, swim two laps in the pool and that their life jackets fit properly. After their swim test in the LYC pool, they learned parts of the boat, points of sail, and how to capsize! All the kids love the capsize drill because it is a fun drill that allows them to cool off in the water while learning how to turn the boat back over! The capsize drill is a very important safety drill. We have to know the sailors are comfortable in the water and not worried when their boat flips over. In the afternoon, the sailors learned how to tie knots, including the bowline and figure eight knots. They are excited to get on the water tomorrow!

Green Fleet crew sailed in the morning and afternoon with lots of wind! They did a windward leeward course with some fun drills included. The sailors did a tacking drill, points drill, and a boat handling drill. Everyone was super competitive which is really exciting for the coaches to see! We had two coaches for the nine sailors, so every sailor had plenty of attention. They progressed so much in one day!

The 420 group practiced upwind and downwind to practice steering and sail trim! The coaches even sailed with each sailor to get some more one-on-one coaching! The kids are excited to get back on the water tomorrow on their own to practice all the skills learned today from their coaches!

REMINDER: Please make sure your child has a water bottle and sunscreen!! The coaches have 5-gallon coolers on their coach boats so the kids can refill their bottles!
