Hi there, I’m Coach Dae, head of the Mercury Mentors. Let me tell you a little bit about our day.
The Mercury Mentors had their first steer! Each sailor took turns skippering our boat, Rubber Ducky. I’m super impressed by the amount of potential in all of my sailors! We went over parts of the boat again and they also learned about wind direction and points of sail. On the water, they not only skippered but some helped me pull in the sail. They also had to point out parts of the boat and tell me where the wind is coming from and what point of sail we were on.
Beginner optis had a great morning. We started the day out in the classroom explaining where to sit on the rail and what to do with your tiller when the sail starts to luff. Coach John and Calli then explained how to do the sausage drill. The sausage drill is reaching around two marks, this helps new sailors become more comfortable in the boat with tacking, gybing, and steering. In the afternoon we did the same sausage drill again with some of the kids going alone until the storm came and we had to go in.
Connor and the Green Fleet spent their morning going over how to properly rig an Opti sail. He also went over a refresher course of how to tie knots. Then, Connor answered some questions that the sailors had about tactics, techniques, and boathandling. In the afternoon, Connor and the Green Fleet sailed to the Cove, where they practiced starts.
While Chase and some of the campers were fixing boats on land, Joey ran races for the remaining sailors. Everyone showed off their skills and did awesome. The competition was a lot of fun for the sailors. For the afternoon, we took the 420s on an adventure sail down one of the canals neighboring LYC. However, the adventure sail was sadly cut short due to the heavy storm.
