Cheers after a 1st Place!

Regatta Practice Friday!

Today, the last day of Session 2, started with a very overcast sky, which is actually very welcome during a Florida summer.  The wind was about 7 knots from the east-southeast with many different wind shifts. The course was set at 10:45 for our summer sailors to race their first real race! What happened next? First, we have to go back….way back…to the beginning of Session 2.

After the sailors in Session 2 did their swim test and capsize drill and they went on the water the first time, we knew we had a special group! They have progressed from none to not much experience to first learning the parts of the boat and where the wind was coming from to towing, to steering straight, to steering straight and trimming the sail, to tacking and gybing, to learning what a racecourse is and a starting sequence, to sailing around a course!

And speaking of the course, here is today’s course, called a windward-leeward course with an upwind and downwind mark and a starting line below the course. The sailors were instructed what the course was this morning and they all did it! Two laps each!

And there was plenty of action after the start! You can see coach Charlie getting in the mix while coaching 420s while they sailed upwind in the very shifty morning breeze.

Close batter for first between the 420 skippered by Denton and Coach Chase’s Team Mercury!

Opti sailors rafted up at the coach boat with Coach Anna and Sophia. This is great to see! They were all asking how they could do better!
