Day Six: Sailing and Relay Racing

In the  light day six morning breeze, the Beginner Opti sailors practiced their trimming skills as they sailed around a triangle course. They practiced trimming in upwind, reach, and broad reach modes. First the sailors sail upwind to the first mark. Then they round the mark and perform a reach, where the sailors sail a little more than perpendicular to the wind. Then the sailors jibe to sail downwind to complete the course.

The 420’s sailed to the cove where they worked on their light wind sailing and capsizing skills. The sailors learned where to position themselves in the boat depending on the different strengths of the wind. In lighter wind, the crew and the skipper should move forward in the boat. The 420 group also improved their capsizing skills. Some sailors learned to perform a ‘dry capsize’, where the sailor is able to right their boat without getting wet.

The Mercury Mentors learned about the different points of sail. Then they used that knowledge wsailing in the Mercury to practice sail trim and steering with coach Dae. The sailors also learned how to read the wind direction by looking at the palm trees and the flags around the yacht club.

In the afternoon storms approached, preventing the sailors from going out on the water. Instead, all three sailing groups came together to play some fun sailing games. We had a parts of the boat chalk drawing and knot tying relay race. Sailing camp day 6 ended a great day and we are hoping for better weather tomorrow.
