Hi everyone! Coach Calli again here to tell you all about our day filled with great sailing.
The Mercury Mentors learned the steps of tacking in the classroom, but when they went out to sail to was too windy for them to try it out. Instead of trying out the tacks they did steering and all loved how fast the boat was going in the wind. Since it was windier than usual, it helped them get accustomed to the boat healing over because of the wind and not to be afraid of it.
Beginner Opti’s started out the morning in the classroom reviewing how to properly rig and take care of the boats we use. They then headed out to do the triangle course. If you remember, the other day we did a sausage course which was focused mostly on reaching. The triangle course introduces them to sailing upwind and using a few tacks. From the morning to the afternoon, every sailor improved greatly!
The Green Fleet had a great morning of learning how to sail in windy conditions. It really tested the sailors to put their knowledge to the test and stay calm in the conditions. Coach Joey said all the sailors handled it really well and were hiking their butts off. In the morning they did the cone drill which helps them learn about laylines. This is important to know since laylines are used a lot during racing. They also did multiple starts to practice where to set up on the line and when they should start pulling in their sail to get some sped at “go.”
The 420’s practiced their sail trim. They practiced this on mark roundings that coach Chase set up fro them in front of the club. They also did a few short courses. In the afternoon the sailors did an adventure sail all the way to Las Olas! That’s a far sail from the Yacht Club and was a great way to practice boathandling.
RWB clinic: In the morning there were some storms coming in from the south near Miami. As a precaution, they stayed inside and sailed in front of the yacht club until the storms got near and they had to come back in. After lunch time though, it was cleared of any storms and they were able to have a great rest of the day on the ocean. They split up into two groups, fleet racing and team racing. It was a great day and there was overall improvement from the sailors.
