Yesterday the mercury mentors learned a lot about the boat they will be sailing all session: the Mercury! They learned about parts of the boat and will go over it again the rest of the week. They may even have a quiz on it soon. They went out for their first sail in the mercury named Bubbles. On the water, they pointed out the parts of the boat and learned where to sit inside the boat.
Beginner Opti’s got their first taste of being in an Opti! The whole day was spent rowing in a long tow behind the boat. Towing is done to help with becoming comfortable with steering the boat and how the boat maneuvers in the water. A tennis ball is also incorporated in the tow. The tennis ball is thrown to every Opti and they steer to get it. It was a great introduction to steering and being in the boat.
The 420 group split in two today for the new and returning sailors. the group of new sailors learned about the points of sail, body positioning in the boat, and how to sail upwind. the returning sailors did a moving racecourse that alternated upwind marks. this drill helped sailors learn laylines in the bigger boats and how to position themselves on the start.
Green fleet: in the morning we ran a small series of races, each with a 2 minute starting sequence. Afterwards we did a follow the leader drill. In the afternoon the green fleeters sailed to the cove and did starting practice until some difficult weather cut the day short
