Summer Sailing Session 4 Day 6

Hello summer sailing families! We had a big day on the water today with consistent medium breeze from the east and clear skies. Each fleet sailed all day to get back into sailing for the final week of camp.

The mercury mentors reviewed their material from the previous week and learned how to tack and gibe. On the water, they each skippered through a few tacks and gibes to get a hang of the maneuver. The group also spent time practicing sail trim and points of sail on the water.

The beginner opti fleet warmed up with a triangle course from last week before moving into more advanced upwinds sailing with tacks. They did very well in the second half of the day when it came to sailing upwind unguided so they were able to sail all the way back to the dock with no tow for the first time!

Green fleet spent the morning warming up with downwind boat handling practice. In the afternoon, the fleet practiced slow boat maneuvering to simulate a start and improve how long they can hold a position on the line for. They finished with a distance sail to and from the cove.

420s started their week-long focus on starts today. The first drill was an over-long line on a short course to help sailors pick a place to start right on layline. This was great practice for perfecting upwind angles and accelerations off the line. In the afternoon sailors learned about a good pre-race routine; they covered checking the line and checking incoming shifts with a partner during sequence.
