Hi everyone! Coach Calli here today telling you about what we did on our rainy Wednesday.
In the morning we started out with a bit of a drizzle but it was nice enough for all the sailors to rig the boats for our day. After rigging the boats the coaches had a meeting to wait for a small storm to pass. Once the storm passed it seemed like it was ok to get out there and go sailing. As all the sailors were sailing out the canal we noticed another storm that popped up on the radar and had to go back into the sailing center.
During rainy days we try are hardest to go sailing in the small windows we have, but we weren’t given any safe opportunities yesterday. Therefore, the coaches prepared a few fun rainy day games. We played drip drip drop, which is a game that is just like duck duck goose, except there is a bailer filled with water to dumb on the “goose”. For each duck, they get a little drop of water on their head. The sailors particularly loved this one. While they played, the coaches played music and sprayed them with the hose to keep them cool while it was still sunny out. When the storm grew closer, we went inside and played a few rounds of very competitive musical chairs. The winner got two pieces of candy and the runner up got one piece.
Other than the games we played coach Sophia and I taught the Opti sailors how to properly rig an Opti sail. We brought the sail upstairs to the classroom and showed them what the proper sail shape looks like. We went over what happens when there’s too much or not enough sprit tension. This is controlled by using one of the four major control lines called the sprit halyard. The other control lines we tackled were the outhaul, mainsheet, and boomvang.
We are hoping for better weather for the rest of the week!
