The LYC Opti Green Fleet program, with Head Coach Mauricio Galarce, is a beginner level sailing race team for kids 8 -13 years old. Fundamental sailing ability is a prerequisite for admission. The purpose of this program is to continue developing sailing skills utilizing a competitive sailing curriculum throughout the academic school year. For many kids, this will be their first time competing in an organized sport. Racing sailboats provides a unique opportunity to instill the Corinthian spirit, learn valuable life lessons and promote good habits including self reliance, attention to detail and teamwork.
Sailors train and compete in the International Optimist Dinghy (Opti), a small boat designed for kids between 40lb and 125lbs to sail by themselves. Attainable goals will be established for each individual sailor at the beginning of the season and leading into events. Winning is defined differently for each sailor, while for some winning is to be crowned the overall champion, for a new sailor it could simply be completing every race. LYC applies a “process oriented” approach to measure a sailor’s development. Work ethic, application of lessons learned, effort, skills improvement etc are some of the metrics we use to evaluate a sailor’s success. Results are closely monitored over time as the sailor gains experience in the sport.
In a sport where sailors compete by themselves, it is our teamwork that provides us with competitive advantage. The collective effort of the sailors, coaches and parents will determine our success. Parent volunteers are necessary to accomplish a myriad of support tasks, including towing to venues, loading and unloading equipment, stocking provisions at events etc. Volunteerism is a celebrated integral part of our team culture.
