Session 1 Day 4 – UPDATE

Hi Everyone! I am Coach Isa, one of the three Mercury Mentor Coaches here at camp. I am here to tell you all about the exciting, yet salty, adventures the fleets endured today.

Starting with my little ones, the Mercury Mentors got to check off the notorious “Capsize” drill allowing them to demonstrate the simple and easy steps to recovering a flipped boat. With this drill being one of the most fun of the session, we were able to put the icing on the cake with Jake’s birthday! A big thank you to Jake as we celebrated with cupcakes and swirly straws!

Beginner Opti

Today was a big day for Beginner Opti as Chase and Kenna took the kids beyond their usual scenery and began exploration of a camp favorite spot, The Cove. Today marks their first official sail with sails up and going around a triangle course. Congratulations to the young sailors! Despite afternoon showers, the kids had a sand bar excursion due to their big improvements on the water today. With seeing how comfortable they were on their own, I am excited to see the progress these sailors will make in the next few days!

Green Fleet

Sailing a windward leeward course the kids were able to warm up to the conditions and improve their boat handling skills. Due to their confidence, Coach Sophia put them through a increasing tack drill. Every time a sailor completed one lap around the course they would add one more tack to their previous amount of tacks, giving them a really good workout! To finish off the day, the Green Fleeters did the points drill. The first sailor to each mark in the course would get one point and have to do a 360. The first to five points wins the drill. Congratulations to Andrew on winning the points drill!

420’s

Today the 420’s sailed around a windward leeward course, expanding their boat handling abilities and improving their upwind and downwind experience. In the afternoon, there were a few thunderstorms, although as soon as they rolled by the fleet was eager to free sail and explore the waterways.

Arthur’s Clinic – Green Fleet

In attempt to beat the storms, Green Fleet launched immediately to the Ocean. Despite their great efforts they were unable to escape summer’s natural tendencies. Coming in for lunch, they watched footage to improve on their tacks. Using these components, in the afternoon they were able to once again get out on the water and do “no hand switch” tacks and “drop the tiller” tacks.
