Today was our ecological exploration day at Whiskey Creek. The entire camp took coach boats to the creek where we had a treasure hunt. Campers followed a quest to find buried treasure (watermelon) and dug their way to victory. Afterwords, coach John (studying to be a marine biologist) taught sailors about the environment and plant life around the barrier island. It was a fun morning and we finished with some time swimming in the ocean.
In the afternoon, we got back to sailing. Beginner Opti ran full length races for the first time. The fleet went from 3-minute starts to a windward-leeward course or a W1 for short. They did very well for the first day on a racecourse!
The 420 fleet worked on steering without the rudder. By using their jibs and body positioning in the boat, sailors were able to rock, roll, and stall their boats in and out of irons. We finished with a competition testing how quickly sailors could go from stopped to sailing without their rudder.
Green Fleet ran a series of tacking drills to get their roll tacks perfected and finished with a competitive W1 race. They also played pirate with the 420 fleet to end the day at the cove.
We had another great afternoon of sailing and we can’t wait to get back on the water tomorrow!
