What a great day to start Session 2! This morning all the sailors completed their swim tests and Optis and Mercury sailors completed the capsize drill. This means Mercury sailors are ready to start sailing! Opti Learn to Sail (LTS) started their towing drill this afternoon. Learning how to tow behind the coach boat is critical for Opti sailing, but more importantly it’s easier to learn how to steer if the pesky sail isn’t in the way! We played the ball game where sailors throw a ball to each other. If they don’t catch the ball and it ends up in the water they have to learn how to steer to get the ball, so they’re learning how to steer while playing a game. It works really well. Tomorrow, we’ll likely put the sail in the boats and tow as the next learning step.
After the swim test this morning 420 sailors learned the parts of the boat and in the afternoon they did a capsize drill by the sandbar to understand how to safely right the boat if they flip over. We had a full day of learning which is great for the first day of camp!
