Mateo Coates Wins Gold at the 2025 Youth World Championship

Mateo Coates has just won the 2025 Youth World Championship, becoming the first American sailor since 2002 to capture the Boys Singlehanded title at Youth Worlds. The regatta was held December 14–19 in Vilamoura, Portugal, where Mateo faced a truly global field, competing against the top ILCA 6 sailors from 55 nations. LYC Coach Erik Bowers also served as the US Sailing coach for the event, guiding the American contingent through a demanding championship week.

The championship did not begin smoothly. After the first three races, Mateo’s scores of 5–13–(37) had him sitting 11th overall, well outside podium contention. But the tone of the regatta shifted decisively on day three as a medium, offshore northerly breeze filled in. Mateo delivered a standout performance with finishes of 1–2–6, a pivotal series that vaulted him all the way to the top of the standings.

Day four brought lighter conditions and tighter racing at the front of the fleet. Mateo posted consistent results of 1–5, while his nearest rival from the Czech Republic went 2–2. Heading into the final day, with just one race scheduled, Mateo held a slim two-point advantage over the Czech sailor and a commanding 20-point cushion over third place from Cyprus.

The final day delivered high drama. Multiple general recalls and intense match-racing set the stage for a decisive moment when the Czech sailor was caught OCS on a black flag start, while Mateo stayed clean. With the pressure on, Mateo knew he simply needed to finish within 20 points of the Cypriot competitor. After rounding the weather mark slightly behind, he executed a smart downwind pass, then controlled the remainder of the race to finish 14th—more than enough to secure the gold medal.

From race four onward, Mateo showed exceptional poise and maturity, starting clean in six consecutive races and consistently making the right strategic calls while other sailors faltered. This victory marks the first Youth Worlds gold medal for a boys’ sailor from the Lauderdale Yacht Club program, a milestone achievement for the club.

The result also highlights a remarkable run for LYC coaches on the international stage. Over the past three years, LYC coaches have led the US Team to three Youth World Championship medals: silver in 2023 in the Nacra 15, bronze in 2024 in the ILCA Girls division, and gold in 2025 in the ILCA 6. In that span, LYC coaches have earned three of the six total US medals awarded at Youth Worlds—an unmatched accomplishment within US sailing.

Yet this success is far from an outlier. Since 2021, five different LYC ILCA boys have finished in the top five at either the Youth World Championships or Under-18 Open World Championships, underscoring the depth and strength of the program. Congratulations to Mateo on earning the first boys’ Youth Worlds title for LYC, and to Coach Erik Bowers for leading an outstanding championship performance on behalf of US Sailing.
