The LYC Opti Green Fleet is a year-round beginner racing team for sailors ages 8 –13 with foundational sailing experience. This program is the first competitive step in the LYC youth sailing pathway and is focused on building skills, sportsmanship, and confidence through organized racing.
Sailors compete in the International Optimist Dinghy (Opti)—a single-handed boat ideal for kids between 40–125 lbs. With a strong emphasis on process over podiums, each sailor’s goals are individualized: for some, it may be winning races; for others, simply finishing every start is a win. Progress is measured through effort, improvement, and commitment, not just results.
Beyond sailing skills, the program fosters self-reliance, attention to detail, teamwork, and the Corinthian spirit. Though sailors race independently, success is built on the collective efforts of coaches, teammates, and especially parent volunteers, who help with logistics such as towing, equipment handling, and event support. Volunteerism is a valued part of our team culture.
