The first week of our summer session has come to a close and what a way to finish! We were greeted this morning with an 8-10 knot southeasterly so everyone went sailing!
In Opti LTS, we had a short debrief followed by a lot of time on the water! Quite a few Opti sailors learned how to sail by themselves today. It’s so much fun to see them progress from day to day! After lunch, the Optis headed to the Cove again since the wind picked up. The cove is a little more protected from the wind since the breeze increased later in the day. In the Cove we did a simple triangle course where they sailed on every angle to the wind. After their sailing they had a quick dip in the water and headed back to LYC to derig the Optis!
Mercury Mentors had a blast this morning! With increased wind they found out that sailboats heel over! The main goal is for them to be comfortable on the water, and slowly getting them used to the boat heeling over is an aspect that’s important! We work to overcome their fears of going fast on the water and sailing in more wind.
Green Fleet worked on body positioning in the boat such as, ‘eyes forward’ and ‘keeping feet and knees together’ in the boat for hiking. Coach Lucy says the sailors have a fast learning curve but of course there’s still room for improvement. Green Fleet also went around the course today!
