Day 4 Session 1- Summer Sailing Camp

Today was a much better day for sailing at Lauderdale Yacht Club! Green Fleet and Mercury Mentors continued their sailing while Opti Learn to Sail finally had their much anticipated sailing in the morning and afternoon!

After check in this morning, we immediately rigged up the Opti LTS boats and headed out to the basin in front of LYC. We spent all morning teaching how to sail and the new sailors did amazing! After lunch we headed out again to the Cove, which is a small protected lake close to LYC for a change of scenery. After sailing for quite a while, most of the sailors took a quick swim before heading back to the Club. We are really impressed with all the sailors progress. We didn’t have to save one single boat from a capsize or straying away from the group.

Mercury Mentors went over the wind wheel, parts of the boat and tacking. Each child took their turn helming the boat in the light southerly breeze in front of LYC! It was a super fun-successful day for Mercury Mentors!

Green Fleet practiced mark roundings, which is a racing term about going around buoys on a racecourse. They also played follow the leader, which is a game where the Optis follow the coach boat, so they have to go upwind, downwind and on a reach. They explored the area around LYC and the Cove!

Tomorrow the forecast is for a little more wind, so we’re looking forward to the sailors progressing even more. Overall, we’re super excited about the Session 1 Sailors!
