First Day of Sailing Summer Camp!

Hi Sailing Families!

Yesterday was our first day of Summer Sailing Camp and we had plenty of action in the morning and afternoon! Some of our new sailors have already left the dock today! Below is yesterday’s daily report from Coach Dae from Mercury Mentors!

Mercury Mentors

This morning, we Mercury Mentors went over parts of the boat as well as parts of the sailing center itself to discuss the “No Go Zones” for our safety. The kids came up with many great ideas of what should be deemed unsafe such as the cranes, the ice machine, and the dock (if you don’t have a lifejacket or shoes). We talked about the many different types of boats we have here. We went over ‘Bubbles’ the Mercury sailboat we had rigged and ready. Lastly, we planned on having a swim test, however, after all the other groups finished, and with the lightning coming in, we sadly didn’t have enough time. Therefore, we are planning the swim test early tomorrow morning!

420’s

In the morning, we carried out the swim test to make sure our campers could swim well. After this, we proceeded with the capsizing recovery drill, where we supervise the children while they flip our boats and right them properly. This drill is to ensure they know what to do when they flip on the water. We also introduced the campers to the parts of the boat. This afternoon, we reinforced that and helped them learn how to rig the 420. Then, we went back out on the water to sail and flip a little bit more! It was great to be able to sail on the first day of camp!

Optis

Today, the Beginner Opti group also was introduced to the parts of the boats we will be sailing this summer: the opti! We also did a swim test. The campers also sat in our on-land simulator, where the coaches showed them how to steer a sailboat before they went on the water for the real deal. In the afternoon, the campers actually steered the boats without sails as the coaches towed them.

Green Fleet

Green Fleet campers went through the swim test as well. After that, we went through proper capsize recovery methods in the canal, so that they knew what to do when it came down to sailing in the afternoon. Before lunch, Coach Stephen taught the campers a lot about storms, which we then applied to the one that passed around LYC. They were also taught how storm watching is an important part of sailing. In the afternoon, the campers did a lot of sailing!
