Day 7 Session 1- Summer Sailing Camp

We had our windiest day of the summer on Day 7, so Opti Learn to Sail headed to the protection of ‘The Cove’ in the morning after some classroom time learning about body position, trimming for different points of sail, passing the tiller behind the back and upwind sailing. They played ‘Follow the Leader’ with Isa in the coach boat. The sailors rounded different coach boats while getting instruction. We worked on quite a bit including tacking, gybing, trimming out downwind…….and capped it off with a little upwind sailing. They are really getting there! After lunch they went back to the Cove for more practice.

Mercury Mentors headed out for more fun sailing. Since it was windier, we split sailing time with on land games and learning. It was a good day to show the Mercury sailors that sailboats are safe in more wind, and that it’s okay when the boat heels over a bit.

Green Fleet learned how a starting line works and practiced staying on the line using the sail to their advantage. Later they practiced heavy wind body positioning and hiking out. In the afternoon Green Fleet relaxed at the Cove and had a leisurely sail, and worked on lighter wind sailing technique.

What a fun day on the water! Today, we are heading to Whiskey Creek. Yesterday and early this morning the forecast didn’t look good to go to Whiskey Creek, but it’s clear until this afternoon. The forecast doesn’t look excellent for tomorrow or Friday, so we made the decision to go today!

During the Whiskey Creek Excursion we head to Dr. Von D. Mizell-Eula Johnson State Park safely by boat first thing in the morning and enter through Whiskey Creek. Whiskey Creek is right on the other side of Port Everglades Inlet from Lauderdale Yacht Club. Our instructors walk the campers around the park and teach about Fort Lauderdale ecology and how we can help save our precious land and oceans. It a camp favorite! They will go for a quick dip at the beach then head back to LYC for lunch. If the weather holds we go for a sail in the afternoon to wrap up the day.
