So far, Session 3 is going great! All of the sailors have been learning and sailing really well. Opti Learn to Sail quickly went from the swim test and capsize drill to towing behind the coach boat to learn how to steer, and now they’re sailing! They did what we call the ‘Sausage Drill’ yesterday, which is two buoys in the water set up perpendicular to the wind and they go around the buoys. Everyone did great and were picking up sailing really fast. Next is learning to tack and gybe, which is turning the boat into and away from the wind to head different directions.
Mercury Mentors have had such luck with the wind, sailing every day! We’re seeing a lot of smiling faces on the Mercury Sailboats and they are such a great group of kids. They learned the parts of the boat and they all have had the opportunity to steer and trim the sails!
The 420 Learn to Sail group have picked up sailing fast as well. The 420 is a little more complicated to sail with two sails instead of one, and they are a little more tippy. These sailors are already sailing upwind and we’re getting them ready to race!
All the sailors have come a long way and will be going around the racecourse in no time!
